The terminal station of the Malpensa Express airport trains service that is closest to Duomo is Cadorna Station (the other one not so close is Milano Centrale Station), and Cadorna forms the edge of the Historical Centre (to the northwest), but it is not primed to attract tourists in the way that Brera is. Much of Brera (roughly north of the Duomo) is within the Historical Centre, and it is adjacent to the Duomo area. Milan's Duomo is the heart and geographical centre of Milan but of course the closer you are, the higher the pressure is on hotel prices. If you want to "eat well and see the sites", then it's best to be within Milan's Historical Centre if you can, since most of the top tourist attractions are around there. However, since you say you will catch a train to Milan, then the airport is most likely to be Malpensa. All three have direct flights from the UK. These three airports rank 2nd, 3rd and 4th busiest in Italy, ahead of the next ranked Venice Airport).
